MX2: Lucas Coenen wins his first GP, three Belgians on the podium
What did not work in Germany became reality in Indonesia today. Negaan Husqvarna Factory pilot Lucas Coenen won both series today by force majeure and thus wins his first Grand Prix in his very young career. He held off Liam Everts, who was also riding strongly. To top it all off, Jago Geerts was also on stage, making him completely Belgian in color.
The holeshot went in this second series to Sacha Coenen, but almost immediately his brother Lucas came over. Jago Geerts was also at the front while Liam Everts finished eighth. The latter was in a hurry and had already advanced to P4 after two laps.
A small slide later dropped him to sixth place. It was Kevin Horgmo who suddenly appeared in third place. Lucas Coenen had meanwhile extended his lead over Geerts to 7 seconds. Liam Everts spotted Horgmo and Geerts in lap eight and pushed to get into the wheel.
Horgmo then started bombarding Geerts' spot, but did not notice that Everts was ogling from his wheel. A moment later it happened and the Lummen native moved up to third place. The match then became one with fellow countryman Geerts. Two laps later, Everts took over second place from Jago Geerts.
Roan van de Moosdijk and Kay de Wolf also had to return from the middle of the pack to the front ranks in this series. That only worked in moderation. World Championship leader Andrea Adamo had a difficult series and finished 7th with a few minutes left on the clockde round. Sacha Coenen had dropped to 12 at that momentde place.
Jago Geerts still came under pressure from Benistant, but kept a cool head and was able to retain third place. Lucas Coenen wins the series and his first GP. Everts comes second ahead of Jago Geerts. We cannot remember when three more Belgians stood on the podium in this class, but this performance is certainly one for the history books. Andrea Adamo continues to lead the rankings in this class and has five points ahead of Thibault Benistant.
