Historic GP victory for Liam Everts!
Joy and sadness were very close together in a sultry hot Teutschenthal. Thanks to a win in the 2nd series, Liam Everts secured his first GP victory, the 125th for the Everts MX dynasty (Harry, Stefan, Liam). The very young Lucas Coenen (16) saw his first GP overall victory slip through his fingers due to a technical defect…
Roan van de Moosdijk and Liam Everts fought for the holeshot, but Lucas Coenen, Adamo, Benistant and Geerts also had a good start. Even before the end of the first round, super talent Lucas Coenen seized power. One lap later Everts made a mistake, causing van de Moosdijk to come back. Although Adamo, fourth at the time, put a lot of pressure on Liamski, the Belgian did not budge. Even more so, Everts found his second wind, beat Adamo and slipped past the Moosdijk just after half the match.
At the front, 16-year-old Coenen made a big impression. The difficult ruts did not bother the Negaan Husqvarna rider. With apparent effort, Lucas managed to gain a nine-second lead. He would eventually win with an almost 8 second bonus over Liam Everts. In the last lap, Van de Moosdijk saw P3 slip away. Adamo took advantage and finished third just ahead of Benistant who completed an unremarkable race.
Despite his wrist injury, Geerts held on for a long time in sixth place. However, due to a mistake on the 11th lap, he lost seven places. Kay De Wolf then again suppressed the pain. After a weak start from the outside behind the starting gate, he came back from outside the top 20 to P11. Sacha Coenen, the twin brother of winner Lucas, neatly recorded his third top-10 ranking of the season. Rick Elzinga had to settle for 18th place.
Liamski makes MX history
Liam Everts stormed to his second holeshot of the day in the restart. After the second corner, Lucas Coenen, winner of race 1, was already in the lead. Jago Geerts again had a great start in third, but soon had to give up on Adamo. Despite his wrist injury, Geerts did a good job to limit the damage. Jago would eventually finish 7th.
At the front, Coenen again made good progress, although Everts quickly followed in the wake of the young Brussels resident. Halfway through the moto a plastic side panel had come loose from the Husqvarna factory rider. Unfortunately, that was the harbinger of more disaster because moments later his engine suddenly stopped. Lucas was heartbroken and the road was now completely open for Liamski. The 18-year-old Limburger kept a cool head in the longest eight laps of his career. Everts remained flawless and crossed the finish line more than 12 seconds ahead of teammate Andrea Adamo.
Kay De Wolf had to play catch-up again. He would still score 10 points. In the MX2 World Championship standings, Andrea Adamo now leads the debates. The Italian KTM rider is 13 points ahead of Thibault Benistant. De Wolf is now 3rd and leads a quartet of lowlanders with van de Moosdijk (4th), Geerts (5th) and Everts (6th)!
