Van der Vlist wins, but not unscathed
The fifth race of the KNMV Open Dutch Championship 500cc in Hellendoorn was won by Freek van der Vlist. The leader in the standings did not emerge unscathed from a battle with Micha Boy de Waal, who won the first round. In the second moto both men collided during the duel for the leading position. Van der Vlist (2-1) wins ahead of Nick Leerkes (3-2) and Rene de Jong (4-3).
1st heat:
Jeremy Knuiman takes the lead in the first moto, but at the end of the first full lap Van der Vlist goes on the attack. He takes the lead while Knuiman falls and is out of the race. De Waal follows in second place and the GasGas driver is getting closer. In the tenth lap the Brabander takes the lead and wins ahead of Van der Vlist and the very strong Leerkes. De Jong started the race in tenth place and the Team Hannamax Motorsport driver crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Joel van Mechelen.
2st heat:
When the starting gate falls for the last time in Hellendoorn, Van Mechelen takes the best start. De Waal and Van der Vlist follow the Van de Velden KTM rider. A small mistake by the fast starter ensures that De Waal takes the lead and a lap later Van der Vlist also passes. The pursuer increases the pressure on De Waal, who makes a mistake after about 15 minutes of the race. Van der Vlist takes over the lead, but De Waal returns later. In the duel for the leading position and the day's victory, Van der Vlist is hit from behind by De Waal, who disappears from the race with a flesh wound. Van der Vlist can continue, but he has to work hard to stay ahead of Leerkes. This comes second for De Jong and Marcel Conijn, who had to settle for a supporting role after a week in Ibiza. Van Mechelen also completes the top five in this round.
Next time:
The KNMV ONK500 will continue on May 21 at the Varsseveld circuit.
