PR: Gregoire starts EMX85 on stage
Dean Gregoire has made a good start to the European Championship 85cc 'Central Europe' at the Lommel circuit. The KTM rider finished third in the overall standings thanks to a fourth and third place during both heats. The victory on the 'Circuit De Heeserbergen' went to fellow countryman Dani Heitink.
First heat:
On Saturday afternoon, Dean managed to qualify as second in his group for Sunday's matches. The start of the first heat was good and the student flew over the first jumping bump, just outside the top five. It is of course difficult in the initial phase of the race, but this goes well for the Voss KTM Racing rider, which means he finishes fourth in the first full lap. There is a small gap to the three in the lead, but due to small mistakes Dean is unable to close the gap. In the second half we connect with Dex van den Broek, who is passed not much later. Three laps later there is a mistake that causes the Alpinestars-clad crosser to fall. Dex Kooiker takes over third place and both then ensure an exciting final phase. It is intense but fair, but Kooiker is not surprised and he comes third ahead of Dean.
Second heat:
The second race of the day over 20 minutes and two laps starts better for Dean. The rider from Geldrop comes out of the first fast corner in third place behind Heitink and Bervoets. In the first lap Van den Broek passes and he also passes Bervoets. The winner of the first heat can quickly take back second place, but Dean needs a little more time to do so. When third place is taken over just in the first half of the race, the leaders have disappeared from view. Dean finishes the race very controlled, he comes third and can therefore climb onto the day's podium.
The second race of the European 85cc Championship will be held next weekend in Denmark. A week later, Dean is back at the start in the Netherlands for the second race of the KNMV Dutch Masters of Motocross in Markelo.
