MX2 race 1: De Wolf beats Geerts in titanic battle
As he proved before, sand specialist Kay De Wolf (18) has no one to fear on a sandy circuit such as the one in Riola Sardo. The Negaan Husavarna rider raced to victory in the opening series of the MX2 GP of Sardinia, just ahead of Jago Geerts and Simon Längenfelder.
The holeshot went to Jago Geerts, while Längenfelder, De Wolf, Adamo and Everts also had a good start. The Belgian's empire would not last long. GasGas factory driver Längenfelder became the new leader but had to make way for De Wolf four laps later.
In the 7th round Geerts (photo above) took over command from De Wolf, but moments later things went wrong again for the World Cup leader! As a result, De Wolf led the dance for Längenfelder and Geerts again. The high pace and the treacherous track claimed more victims as Liam Everts also crashed, knocking him back from P5 to P9.
A dogged Geerts quickly made short work of Längenfelder and then started the hunt for De Wolf. Although he felt Jago breathing down his neck, De Wolf did not flinch and steamed ahead to the third series victory of his young career. Geerts' teammate Thibault Benistant came in 4th ahead of Andrea Adamo and Lucas Coenen (photo below).
A sick Rick Elzinga had to leave the match early. With Roan van de Moosdijk in P8, all official Husqvarna pilots were in the top 10. The decisive second round will take place at 16:10 PM!
