MX Buddy App: Technology to analyze your lap times
In this digital age, the possibilities for analyzing your dirt bike laps are more extensive than ever. In the coming weeks we will discuss some options starting with the MX Buddy App.
What is it?
MX Buddy App is a…..er…. app on the smartphone (currently only the iPhone from Apple) that connects to a Bluetooth device equipped with an internal GPS. You can of course analyze your laps in the app, but, which is a significant added value, you can also analyze them in real time on your motorcycle. The app was created by Christian Pietsch, a software developer with a motocross history.
The devices you can connect to are, in addition to your smartphone itself, the Apple Watch, a Garmin sports watch, a Polar sports watch and a number of other smartwatches that have a GPS receiver. You can also connect to devices specifically intended for lap timing, such as the Racebox Mini and the XGPS160.
What can it do?
It can display all your lap times in the app but also on your smartwatch that you have attached to the handlebars. The times of sections can also be displayed. It is even possible to have the lap times resound with a spoken message in your wireless earphones. If you wear your smartwatch on your wrist, you can even register your heart rate. You can even record your workouts with your iPhone's fitness app.
You can record the engine settings in the app per circuit or training location to keep all your data in one place. Even integration of your results on Mylaps is possible. Your maintenance schedule can also be saved in the app.
The advantage of MX Buddy?
With other systems you have to go to the pits every time to view your results and lap times. With the MX Buddy App you get to see or hear everything in real time. The number of laps is recorded, as well as the total riding time, lap times, sector times, comparison with a previous lap and heart rate monitoring. We haven't tried it ourselves yet, but the AirPods, Apple's wireless earphones, would not be disturbing under a helmet.
Are there also disadvantages?
There aren't really any, although the MX Buddy App website acknowledges that everything depends on the quality of the GPS reception. There, smartwatches are slightly at a disadvantage compared to GPS receivers such as the Racebox Mini. In principle, you can also place your smartphone on your motorcycle, but you have to find a suitable solution for this.
What does it cost?
This is a major advantage over other systems. You pay once to download the MX Buddy App on your iPhone. If you own a smartwatch (with GPS) you do not have to incur any additional costs to use the system. You can purchase the app for 9,99 euros in the Apple App Store.
