Kay de Wolf wins the dress rehearsal
In front of many spectators, Kay de Wolf won the last race before the start of the Grand Prix season. The 18-year-old Husqvarna rider managed to win both heats on the special Lierop circuit. In addition to the rider from Eersel, two Yamahas were on the podium: Andrea Bonacorsi (2-2) and Jago Geerts (3-3).
Ivano van Erp is off to a very good start with the Hutten Metaal-Yamaha and he seems to be winning the Hoco Parts Holeshot Award. However, it is De Wolf who slips in and takes over the lead from Van Erp. Oriol Oliver comes out of the first corner in third ahead of SB KTM rider Jens Walvoort and Joel Rizzi who won the MX2 class at Hawkstone Park last week. The Husqvarna rider in particular sets a high pace while Van Erp comes to blows with Geerts after three laps. However, the Balenaar makes a mistake just before entering the Lierop forests and falls. He takes his time and drops back to thirteenth place. Van Erp tries to hold on to second place, but teammate Bonacorsi passes and the Italian crosses the finish line in second place, 52 seconds behind the winner. Geerts will return and the 22-year-old rider finishes third ahead of Spaniard Oliver and Cas Valk. The Fantic rider did not have a good start and crossed the first table mountain in 25th. The reigning EMX125 champion makes a very good return with his 250cc 2-stroke machine.
De Wolf again started the race well in the second round and flew over the large table mountain as leader. Oliver follows Bonacorsi, Van Erp and Kay Karssemakers on the BT Racing Husqvarna. In the first lap Bonacorsi manages to pass the Spaniard from the German WZ Racing Team, but De Wolf is in a hurry. The Brabander wants a little too much and he hits the sand in the third laps. Bonacorsi takes over the lead, but not much later it is De Wolf in the lead again. After more than ten minutes, Bonacorsi sees Geerts pass, but he is no closer to the leader. In fact, he seems to be satisfied with second place and then suddenly there is Bonacorsi. In the last round he manages to bet a number on second place and with success! The 20-year-old Oliver, born in Girona, also managed to cross the finish line in fourth place in this round, followed again by the 17-year-old Valk.
The Dutch Masters of Motocross starts in two weeks. The first race in the series of three will be held on March 19 at the Harfsen circuit. The competitions in Markelo and Oldebroek will follow later in the season.
