Herlings treats the audience to a double whammy
With resounding victories, Jeffrey Herlings has won the first competition of the KNMV Dutch Masters of Motocross. The KTM rider won both heats at 't Peppelenbos, making him the first leader in the championship that will consist of three races in the coming years. Romain Febvre (3-2) finished second behind 'The Bullet' while Calvin Vlaanderen (4-3) completed the podium.
In the first heat, Herlings takes the best start, followed by Brent Van Doninck and Micha Boy de Waal. The GasGas rider has to make the most of the start to follow the leaders, but he holds his own well. Febvre follows De Waal but the Frenchman needs three laps to take over third place. Herlings and Van Doninck have already disappeared from the picture and Febvre chooses third place. Herlings sets the pace at the front, but the Belgian from Jacky Martens' team is not easily let go. The difference at the checkered flag is just three seconds in favor of the 28-year-old KTM rider. Van doninck therefore comes second ahead of Fevbre. Flanders has had problems in the early stages and he is trapped in midfield. However, the reigning champion is fighting back very well. The Gebben-Van Venrooy Racing driver managed to cross the finish line in fourth place ahead of the now 35-year-old Maxi Nagl.
At the start of the second moto we miss Brian Bogers who crashed in the first moto. He suffered a burn and is no longer allowed to compete in the second heat. Van Doninck seems to have the best start, but Herlings drives into his back, causing the rider from Herentals to widen and become unbalanced. Herlings takes the lead while Van Doninck collides with another rider in the second corner and has to leave the race! Febvre, Jere Haavisto, Nagl and Flanders follow the five-time world champion. Both Nagl and Haavisto are quickly passed by Flanders who then chases Febvre. The four-second deficit is quickly erased and the born South African then goes on the hunt for the leader. The Yamaha rider is the fastest man on the track and he looks at Herlings' back until he makes a mistake and falls. Febvre passes again and the Frenchman comes second behind Herlings but ahead of Flanders. Nagl crosses the finish line in fourth place, but he is penalized for making too much noise. Haavisto comes fourth ahead of Bulgarian Petr Petrov, who lives in Belgium and currently rides a private Yamaha.
That our sport is still alive became clear in Harfsen where the HAMAC had the greatest difficulty in getting all the people to park. There were rows of things next to the circuit and that of course bodes well for the coming competitions on circuits that are also well attended!
The KNMV Dutch Masters of Motocross continues on March 23. Then the series will be a guest at the Markelo circuit.
