Preview: 2023 250SX East Coast
The Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship 250SX East Coast begins this weekend in Houston. It is up to Honda to defend the title won by Jett Lawrence. They have the favorite with Hunter Lawrence, but it will not be an easy title battle. The Australian faces resistance from Star Racing-Yamaha-Monster Energy and what are the chances of Tom Vialle and Max Anstie?
Yamaha:
With Jordon Smith, Star Racing may have Hunter Lawrence's biggest opponent. Smith has had a lot of injuries in recent years, but with Firepower Honda Racing he managed to finish sixth last season. Nate Thrasher already has victories to his name, but can he also compete in the title fight? That is the big question, speed is not a problem, but he has not yet managed to score well in all matches. The much-discussed Haiden Deegan will also compete in this championship, there will be a heavy burden on the shoulders of this 16-year-old rider who has a large amount of talent.
Jeremy Martin also competes in this championship, but he has left Star Racing for Team Club MX-Muc Off-FXR where he has Preston Kilroy as a colleague. Garrett Marchbanks was injured in December and did not recover in time to participate.
Sling:
Hunter Lawrence is the title favorite but unlike his brother, he does have a teammate. Chance Hymas will make his debut in this discipline but he will not compete in the entire championship. Brit Anstie was moved from the West Coast to the East Coast at the last minute, can he revive his career on the Firepower Honda? Honda's third team is Phoenix Racing-Honda, which will field no fewer than four riders, namely Jace Owen, Cullin Park, Caden Braswell and Coty Schock.
Kawasaki:
Jo Shimoda initially had Team Pro Circuit-Kawasaki-Monster Energy, Hunter Lawrence's biggest opponent in their ranks. However, the Japanese has been injured and he has to watch for the time being. The same thing happened to Seth Hammaker, causing Mitch Payton to call on the retired Chris Blose. The American would only focus on the FIM Supercross World Championship, but he cannot simply ignore this opportunity with Team Pro Circuit.
GasGas-Husqvarna-KTM:
With two MX2 world titles to his name, Tom Vialle has made the switch to the USA. The Frenchman will have the skills, but driving in a stadium with about 50.000 pairs of eyes on you is not easy. After the loss of Shimoda, we see Michael Mosiman, just like Smith, as Hunter Lawrence's biggest opponent and the GasGas driver has already shown that he is not afraid of some action. Jalek Swoll was supposed to be the Husqvarna rider on the East Coast but he is also injured and will be replaced by Talon Hawkins.
Suzuki:
On the West Coast you have BarX-Suzuki, but in this championship Marshal Weltin is all alone. He will have to score the points on behalf of Progressive-HEP Motorsports-Suzuki. We know Weltin in Europe from his performances at BUS Racing and F&H Kawasaki Racing, but he has not yet shown much in the USA.
Ten games are scheduled for the East Coast, starting at Houston's NRG Stadium.
