Kevin Benavides breaks thigh
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Kevin Benavides will not participate in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the second round of the FIM World Rally-Raid Championship. The day before yesterday he fell during the shakedown tests before the race. The accident left the newly crowned Dakar Rally champion breaking his right femur.
Benavides was eventually airlifted to Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai, where his injury was confirmed. Fortunately, the first neurovascular examinations revealed no major damage to the blood vessels or nerves. Kevin was operated on yesterday at 10am local time.
The operation took just over two hours and the doctors were very pleased with the result. Kevin is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming days, depending on his progress.
While it is difficult to say at this time how long Benavides will need to return to racing, everyone at Red Bull KTM wishes him all the best and a full and speedy recovery. Benavides won his second Dakar Rally last month.
