Strong Douwe Van Mechgelen in Grayan!
Before the big boys take action tomorrow, today it was the turn of the Juniors (MX2 + 125cc) in Grayan et l'Hôpital, the penultimate round of the French beach racing championship. The victory went to Adrien Petit ahead of Tanel Bajeux and Paolo Maschio.
Damien Knuiman (MX rookies Team) came out strong as the first 125cc rider and fourth overall. Belgian Douwe Van Mechgelen finished fifth and second in the 125cc.
Proud dad Joris summarized the race as follows: “Douwe started seventh. Petit (photo below) dominated at the front, but after 45 minutes of the race Douwe was in third place overall. At that point he was 10 seconds behind second.
Then he came to refuel and change his glasses. In the lap after the pit stop, a straggler crashed just before Douwe. Douwe's wheel got stuck in the footrest of the one left behind. As a result, he was only 9th when he got back on track.
With 30 minutes to go, Douwe was about a minute behind Damien Knuiman, leader in the 125cc.
Douwe rode very strongly and completely closed the gap. The last 3 laps Douwe was almost the fastest of the entire field. Unfortunately, he could no longer make a fist in the last round. He suffers too much from blisters on his hands, so he just ended up stranded in the wheel of 3 and 4.”
