Dakar: Luciano Benavides wins 9th stage, Toby Price creeps closer
Today we had to navigate the ninth stage of the Dakar rally. Those who were the first to start the journey immediately had to deal with navigation errors. Argentinian Husky rider Luciano Benavides benefited most from others' mistakes and won the stage ahead of Toby Price (KTM) and Skyler Howes (Husqvarna).
Ross Branch, Daniel Sanders, Adrien Van Beveren and Mason Klein were the men who shared the blows. Luciano Benavides had started 21st and was able to follow the right tracks. The Aussie Toby Price rode a great stage but was stranded within a minute of Benavides. It is already the second victory for Benavides in the 2023 edition, he previously also won the sixth stage. Joan Barreda Bort crashed early in the internship and had to be taken to Riyadh hospital.
Adrien Van Beveren finished 14th and had to lose 15 minutes to the winner. Daniël Sanders finished 20th in more than 19 minutes. Ross Branch lost 25 minutes and came in 28th. Once again Jérôme Martiny scored a solid race, resulting in 34th place. Mirjam Pol finished 43rd while her compatriot Wesley Aaldering managed to end the stage from Riyadh to Haradh in P51.
Skyler Howes remains the leader in the standings, but only has 3 seconds left over Toby Price. Kevin Benavides is third at 5 minutes. The Dakar has not yet been completed, but from fourth place the gap has already increased to 15 minutes. Tomorrow the tenth stage is on the program with a ride between Haradh and Shaybah. It is a stage with a long connecting stage of 510 km, of which only 114 km are ridden for the classification through the so-called Empty Quarter. The subsoil in this region is known for its very loose sand.
