VIDEO: Track preview of the first ever World Supercross Grand Prix
This weekend will mark the first time that a race will be held in the brand new WSX competition, the supercross world championship. This spectacle will take place on Saturday 8 October at the Principle Stadium in Cardiff.
The track was built according to the vision of the track designers at Dream Traxx. The layout builds on conventional supercross models, but innovates and improves to deliver high quality and competitive racing to the fans, while also placing an emphasis on rider safety. The goal: to enable riders to ride faster, harder and safer than ever before.
The unveiling of this weekend's course comes as the stage is cleared for the first-ever World Supercross Grand Prix, which will see 40 of the world's best supercross riders at the starting gate on Saturday.
The first Grand Prix gives British fans the chance to see the sport's biggest names in action. Former world supercross champion Eli Tomac, two-time champion and supercross champion Chad Reed and AMA motocross champion and supercross star Ken Roczen line up alongside a host of European talents – such as French champion and former world motocross champion Jordi Tixier and Italian Angelo Pellegrini – while Britain's Max Anstie and Dean Wilson cheer up the home crowd.
The spectacle will be complemented by freestyle motocross shows, awe-inspiring fireworks and a live performance from music giant AJ Tracey, while fans can get closer to their racing heroes with pit walks and rider signings. The 2022 FIM Supercross World Championship also breaks with tradition with a new event format designed for maximum action, excitement and entertainment.
The addition of a superpole session for the WSX (450cc) class will see 10 riders – the top five finishers from the two heat races – start one at a time in a time trial, with lap times determining the starting places for the main events .
The main events have been renewed for both the WSX and SX2 classes (250 cc). For the WSX class, the typical 20-minute races have been replaced by two eight-minute races and one 12-minute race, with just five minutes between them. The result is a higher level of intensity and unpredictability and more emphasis on the importance of a good start. The SX2 class will have two six-minute races and one 10-minute race.
