Coupe de l'avenir: Belgian 85cc success, British overall victory
The Coupe de l'Avenir celebrated its 50th anniversary this weekend. Although MX Hauts-Pays had done everything they could to make it an unforgettable edition, the weather gods decided differently yesterday in Baisieux. The overall victory, the ranking of the country teams across the 65cc, 85cc and Open, went to Team Great Britain.
The Baisieux paddock woke up to the rain on Sunday. And the water kept coming down in buckets. As a result, the track initially became very difficult and later became impassable. The race management had to cancel the third round and the 65cc riders did not compete at all on Sunday.
For the 65cc riders, the Cup rankings were determined based on the results of Saturday's qualifying round. In the final standings, the French won this class reserved for the youngest riders. Dion Brakke was the best lowlander with an 8th place. Timeo Mohring and Sacha Goblet finished 12th and 13th on the Belgian side.
In the 85cc class, our compatriots Jarne Bervoets, Ian Ampoorter and Seth Priem were doing well. Thanks to 3rd, 4th and 5th places, the young trio took a final victory for Belgium in the 85cc Cup. This is the 4th success of the Belgian team in this class since its founding in 2007.
In the Open category for drivers up to 21 years old, all eyes were on the Coenen brothers. On Saturday, Lucas won the Open qualifying race with force majeure ahead of Tom Grimshaw, Sacha Coenen, Leopold Ambiornsson and Sam Nunn.
The next day, Sacha Coenen was the best Belgian with third place. The British Sam Nunn, cousin of ex-GP rider Carl Nunn, was now the most regular for Uldis Freibergs. Lucas Coenen finished 11th while Tias Callens, 13th, did well as one of the few 125cc riders in the Open class. The young West Flemish rider even finished third among the 125cc riders. MX Hauts Pays club rider Romain Delbrassinne finished a decent seventh.
Nunn led Great Britain to gold ahead of France and Belgium in the Open category team standings. In the general final ranking we saw the same three countries at first, second and third.
