Platte takes the first day's victory of the season in Overloon
The next round in the battle for the championship in the MX2 youth class took place in Overloon last Saturday. This time at the Duivenbos circuit it was Sjef Platte who managed to take his first day victory of this season. After finishing fourth in the first moto, Platte won the second moto. Second place went to Spaniard Roger Ponsa with a third and second place in the heats. Based on the second heat, he kept Alex van Weerdenburg behind him, who took his second podium place of the year. Dani Koot and Jesse van Daal completed the top five. Championship leader Jippe Selen managed to win the first round, but dropped out in the second round.
First heat
Van Weerdenburg was the fastest away ahead of Ponsa, Platte and Lenn Daniels. In the first lap the top of the field was quickly shuffled. After passing the first lap, it was Van Weerdenburg who managed to retain the lead. Selen had already driven himself to second place ahead of Platte. Ponsa had fallen and was now in fourth place and Vigo Dral came through in fifth. Selen took the lead one lap later and Ponsa fell back to fifth place again due to a fall. The holes seemed to have been punched quickly. Selen was comfortably in the lead. Van Weerdenburg and Platte battled for second place and behind them the battle for fourth place was between Dral and Ponsa. However, Selen's lead was canceled out by a fall. Platte had passed van Weerdenburg and was now four seconds behind. Van Weerdenburg finished fourth in about eight seconds and Ponsa followed well behind. It was one lap later that Platte also crashed and fell back to fourth place just behind Ponsa. Selen ultimately won the heat 45 seconds ahead of van Weerdenburg. Behind them, Platte and Ponsa drove towards Van Weerdenburg in their mutual duel, but they were stranded within a few seconds. It was Ponsa who won this battle. Fifth place went to Dral.
Second heat
It was Van Weerdenburg again with the best start ahead of Ponsa, Platte, Selen and Daniels. It was Dral who was briefly in fifth place, but he was immediately passed again by Luc Pullen. In the meantime, Ponsa had taken over the leading position. However, he also quickly saw Selen and Platte pass him by. Van Weerdenburg was one of the few to survive the first heat in the Overloon mud, but now he was unable to do so and now finished fifth behind Pullen. As quickly as Selen took the lead, he fell away just as quickly. With machine trouble he was sidelined and the leading position was now Platte ahead of Ponsa, van Weerdenburg. Pullen found the Overloon mud and fourth place now belonged to Koot. He was followed again by van Daal. This made the top five. Platte finished and took both the heat victory and the day victory. Ponsa briefly lost second place, but managed to fight back and followed within nine seconds. Van Weerdenburg was right behind it. Well behind, Koot finished fourth and van Daal saw the checkered flag in fifth
