Can Team Australia win the MXoN for the first time?
At the Motocross of Nations in RedBud this weekend, the Australian team is more than a contender. All three drivers will be together under the HRC canopy, which could be crucial for the team's spirit. Mitch Evans, Hunter and Jett Lawrence are the men who will defend the colors of their country but also those of their employer Honda.
The highlight of the season is the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations, which will be held this year on the legendary RedBud circuit in Michigan/USA. Team Australia is much more than an outsider this year because in addition to the two Lawrence brothers, Australian HRC world champion Mitchell Evans will also be in the ring for Australia. Evans has recently shown great results on good days in the MXGP.
Evans started from pole position in Uddevalla. Together with the two Lawrence brothers, the three riders will form a full HRC line-up, which is another advantage because the team can count on a perfect team structure.
The Australian team did not participate in 2021. That is why the three Hondas in RedBud will appear at the starting gate with the high starting numbers 113, 114 and 115. The starting numbers at the MXoN are assigned according to the results of the previous year. This year Antonio Cairoli will wear starting number 1 because the Italians won the MXoN last year.
Jett Lawrence could even pull off a surprise in his 450 debut. The younger of the two Lawrence brothers won both the US 250cc Motocross Championship and the US Supercross East Coast Championship this year. He will compete in RedBud for the first time on the Honda CRF450R in the Open category.
This setup was a surprise, as most observers saw Jett as an MX2 setup. But the youngster has probably already shown in training that he can handle the bigger machine. In any case, we can be curious. It's clear that Hunter is also a top-notch MX2 rider. This year he placed third at the AMA Nationals in the 250cc class.
Mitch Evans competes in the MXGP class: “It is always a special honor to represent Australia in the Motocross of Nations“explains the 23-year-old. “I have been looking forward to this event all season. It's great to ride next to Hunter and Jett. The fact that all three of us are HRC riders makes it even cooler. We've known each other for a long time and although we're racing in different series now, it's great that we're now competing in the Nations. We are confident we can compete at the highest level and challenge for the Chamberlain Trophy."
