In picture; World Championship Sidecar final Rudersberg '22
Last weekend the World Cup Sidecar Cross season traditionally ended in Rudersberg. It was a weekend full of drama, mud, beautiful sidecar cross and a new World Sidecar Cross Champion 2022! In the very last GP of '22, Bax/Cermak managed to turn a five-point deficit from Varik/Kunnas into a four-point lead and thus the title. In 22 photos we take you to the already legendary GP Sidecar final 2022 in Rudersberg, Germany.
The track was still open on Saturday morning
quite easy to drive.
There was a lot of sticky clay along the edges of the track. As soon as a bucket wheel came in, people literally stood still. And then, in the words of baking artist Robbie Bax, it was time to 'play with the clay'
There was enough speed for the teams to sometimes push things a little higher.
Varik/Kunnas view everything with a helicopter view.
The public also frequently tried to capture the flying sidecars with their smartphones.
During the B qualifying, Kinge/De Laat did not land properly and crashed hard. Fortunately, they were eventually able to walk away on their own.
At the end of the B qualification there was suddenly a huge downpour!
This caused the track to be flooded and it became slipping and sliding during the start of the qualifying race group A.
It was muddy, but the teams all seemed to be getting around fine.
Until sidecars got stuck in the thick layer of mud on a small part of the track.
Sidecars that drive in all directions or are stationary... chaos abounds.
Stopping the match early was the best option.
No matter how much gas was given into this mass of blubber. There was no escape from a standstill for anyone.
The rest of Saturday was canceled and this ultimately turned out sour for the Belgian Davy Sanders and his partially bloodied baking player Luc Rostingt. They were out and could not participate in the GP on Sunday.
On Saturday afternoon there was still one person who had fun in the mud.
Fortunately, racing was still possible on Sunday afternoon. The tension was palpable for the leading Estonian Kert Varik.
The start of the first heat turned out to be the only moment on Sunday that Varik would see his competitor Bax on the cross track.
Bax/Cermak were by far the strongest and won the first heat with control and a big lead.
In the second heat, Bax/Cermak took second place in a controlled manner and thus enough points for the World Championship title!
After the finish, Kert Varik immediately came to congratulate Bax and here in the photo Cermak on the World Championship title, despite still looking and thinking 'what if...'
Marvin Vanluchene and the retiring Robbie Bax won the GP and finished third in the World Championship standings.
Finally, Varik/Kunnas and Bax/Cermak fought a duel on the podium for the last time this GP.
