Is Ducati coming to motocross?
Rumors are rumors and initially we do not want to respond to them without further investigation. However, we cannot ignore the fact that knowledgeable people from the sector confirm these reports. Although it has not been confirmed from the Italian side, it appears that Ducati wants to take a step towards motocross.
The MXGP class could get two new manufacturers in 2024: In addition to the British brand Triumph, the Italian brand Ducati also hopes to participate in the Motocross World Championship. Ducati previously presented the DesertX, a powerful travel enduro, and is working on a 450cc engine for a motocross project. The Italians aim to test a prototype before the end of 2022. They are already carefully putting out feelers in the paddock of the motocross GPs to scan the terrain for a possible collaboration and to request all necessary parts from technical suppliers.
Their ambitions are still in a development phase and the organization of their racing structure is still far from finalized: Whether it concerns an internal factory team, a collaboration with an existing MXGP team (similar to their involvement in the Superbike World Championship) or the granting of material and technical support is not yet known.
At Triumph, on the other hand, it is rumored that the British manufacturer is already further advanced in its program for the MXGP World Championship and the American Supercross and Motocross series and that the manufacturer is busy testing racing bikes. However, Triumph is not expected to officially compete in an FIM or AMA championship before 2024 or the end of the 2023 season calendar.
