Home victory Vialle, Geerts remains World Cup leader
During the penultimate round of the MX2 World Championship, Tom Vialle delivered a blow to title rival Jago Geerts. Vialle won the GP in Saint-Jean d'Angély while Geerts lost valuable points after a 3-7 score. Geerts therefore starts the last GP with a 2-point lead over Vialle…
The fact that Jago Geerts set the fastest lap in the first moto said everything about his speed. Still, the opener turned out to be a frustrating experience for the Monster Energy Yamaha rider. After all, Geerts was third for almost the entire race, behind winner Thibault Benistant and home favorite Tom Vialle.
There was a commotion at the start of race 1 as Horgmo went straight and was the last to continue his race. The holeshot went to Andrea Adamo, who had Benistant, Vialle and Längenfelder behind him. Benistant almost immediately moved to the front while Geerts took the lead from Adamo and Längenfelder.
Overtaking opportunities and therefore effective overtaking actions were extremely rare in the first moto. Leader Benistant was able to control to take his fourth series victory of the season. Both Vialle and Geerts had to swallow their frustrations. They both got into the wheel of their predecessor, but that was it. In the championship standings, Jago lost two points to title rival Vialle.
After a steady race, Längenfelder and Mikkel Haarup finished 4th and 5th. Liam Everts, third in yesterday's qualifying race, now finished 7th. For Roan van de Moosdijk and Kay De Wolf, 13th and 14th respectively, the opening race was one to quickly forget. Kay Karssemakers quickly dropped out.
Triumphal procession Vialle, expensive mistakes Geerts
The holeshot this time it was for Tom Guyon for Benistant and Vialle. However, Vialle immediately went on the offensive and resolutely took the lead. Jago Geerts started his race in 6th position, which meant he faced a major challenge.
Roan van de Moosdijk had a top-5 start and was quickly able to wrest P4 from Haarup. Geerts took hold, with 20 minutes plus 2 laps to go, the difference with Vialle was barely 8 seconds. Although Jago eventually got hold of van de Moosdijk, things went wrong shortly afterwards. The World Cup leader slipped away from the front and lost even more valuable time starting his engine.
At the front, Vialle was able to control after creating a gap on pursuer Benistant. VRT KTM rider Guyon rode the race of his life in front of his own audience. Although he felt the hot breath of van de Moosdijk and Everts, Guyon held on! In the final phase Everts, 5th at the time, came under heavy pressure from Horgmo. Ultimately, the Norwegian would win ahead of Everts and Geerts. The fact that Jago still made it to the podium was little consolation. Although the Kempen native leaves France as World Cup leader, the momentum is now definitely in favor of former world champion Vialle.
The denouement of the Motocross World Championship will take place in Turkey in 14 days Afyonkarahisar
