Technology: five things you do wrong with the suspension
Admittedly, adjusting a suspension is less easy than you think. But with a little help you can start from some basic adjustments that you can easily do yourself.
However, many people buy a new dirt bike and do nothing with the basic settings. We come to your rescue!
- Verify that you have the correct coil springs on your motorcycle. By the springs we mean the ones that are adapted to your weight. That is a basic adjustment to create a good balance.
- Check your racing sag and your static sag. This is what every MXGP mechanic does when a new rider signs up. Then why wouldn't you?
- Know what you are doing when you turn your clickers. It is your personal fine-tuning of your suspension. Are you unable to arrive at a perfect adjustment? Then consider having your suspension adjusted by a tuner.
- Don't be afraid to play with your settings. Try some other settings, but always make a note of the one you start from so you don't lose your bearings. Adjusting clickers is like sex: remember what you like and forget what you don't.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the fork legs into the triple clamp with the correct force. This is very important because fork legs are regularly tightened too tightly, causing them to deform or the inner legs to no longer cover the full spring distance. This also applies to the nuts and bolts that attach your front wheel to the fork. A torque wrench is a "must have" if you tinker with a dirt bike, invest in one. The force with which the steering head is tightened also influences the steering characteristics of your machine. The rear suspension also needs to be tightened with a torque wrench. It directly affects the steering characteristics and the flex that the frame has while riding.
