Motocross noise standards 2023, 2024 and 2025
For a number of years, the Netherlands (and other Western European federations) have been indicating to the FIM that it is time to take action to reduce noise production in Motocross.
At a local level, we are increasingly encountering problems with regard to obtaining and maintaining permits for circuits (see also the MX master plan). The FIM recently announced that they will reduce the noise level by 2 dB(A) with the World Championship MXGP and MX3 classes next season. Currently, 114,0 dB(A) is the maximum before the start of the race and in 2023 it will be 111,0 dB(A). For all other classes, the noise level is maintained at 114 dB(A), but they will move to the 1 dB(A) standard as of January 2025, 111,0.
KNMV and MON operate together in the case of noise standards and there has been consultation about how to deal with noise in the Netherlands for the future. The following conclusions emerged:
The industry will produce new machines with lower noise levels by 2023 and these will therefore be used at World Cup (and perhaps European Championship) level. It is likely that most drivers in the Netherlands do not immediately have access to a new model.
It is impossible for the associations (MON and KNMV) to maintain different noise levels in the regulations for different classes.
The affiliated associations have clearly indicated that they need to reduce noise in the Netherlands.
In line with these conclusions, it has been decided that both the KNMV and the MON will reduce the maximum noise level by 1 dB(A) every year for the next three years. We do this in order to arrive at the maximum permitted value of 2025 dB(A) for all classes by the 111 season, just like the FIM.
This means a maximum noise level of:
2023: 113,0 dB(A)
2024: 112,0 dB(A)
2025: 111,0 dB(A)
