Lucas Coenen at a lonely height in Lommel
The seventh race of the European Championship 250cc was dominated by Lucas Coenen. The Husqvarna rider won both heats on the tough sand circuit of Lommel. The 15-year-old rider had to fight hard in the first round, but in the second round he put the competition far behind.
More than 17 years ago, Coenen's team boss Bas Verhoeven was also on the podium, winning the MX2005 GP of Belgium in 3. In addition to Coenen and Verhoeven, Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing riders Rick Elzinga and Andrea Bonacorsi are on the podium.
The best start during the second heat goes to Maxime Grau, but he is quickly passed by the Coenen brothers. The eldest of the twins takes the lead and immediately makes his ambitions clear. With special lap times he distances himself from brother Sasha and later Elzinga. The 20-year-old leader in the championship manages to hold on to second place for the first half of the race, but then Guillem Farres and Quentin Marc Prugnieres arrive. Both pass 'De Rickert', but the Frenchman drops out a little later. As a result, the rider from Zenderen managed to regain third place and held on to it until the finish.
In the first lap Bonacorsi briefly misses the track only to crash later in the race. However, the Italian comes back very strong and manages to pass Camden McLellan on the last lap. The rider from Bergamo finished fourth, putting the 19-year-old rider on the podium. Dave Kooiker rides well at the front, but he crashes in the final phase, after which the 16-year-old rider leaves the race. Marcel Conijn (12th), Jens Walvoort (17th) and Kjeld Stuurman (18th) are in the points, but Bradley Mesters (21st) is unfortunately unable to do so.
There are three more races for the European 250cc Championship and these will follow each other in quick succession! The first weekend of August will be held in Sweden, immediately followed by competitions in Finland and France. Elzinga now has a 30 point lead Cornelius Toendel who finished sixth in both heats this weekend.
