Five minutes with Hunter Lawrence
After Antonio Cairoli we were also able to get Hunter Lawrence for a short chat in Pala. The opener of the AMA Nationals was held there last weekend.
Hunter Lawrence finished second twice after his brother Jett. We went to the awning of the HRC Honda Team and spoke to the young talent from Australia.
MXMag: At the end of the Supercross season you seemed like the man of the moment. How did that feel?
Hunter Lawrence: That felt very good. I was so close to winning four games in a row. I crashed in one of the races and was still able to finish the championship 10 points behind the championship winner. That was really cool. I was happy to end the supercross with this vibe and take that momentum into the Nationals.
MXMag: Before the start of Supercross you weren't supposed to do the West Coast competition. How exactly did that go?
Hunter Lawrence: Well, of course I was training for the East Coast races but then Jett crashed and injured himself. Then I was told I was ready and could do the West Cost races. So we did that.
MXMag: Before the Nationals you were training a lot with your brother Jett. Are there differences between your training schedules?
Hunter Lawrence: Do you mean the speed? Yes, I'm faster than him (laughs). Now, in the week before this race in Pala I was sick so my preparation was not optimal. I felt weak today during the race but next weekend will be better.
MXMag: This year you'll be riding the 250. Any plans for next year?
Hunter Lawrence: Yes, next year we will stay in the 250cc class and try to win the Supercross championship and hopefully get a title in the Nationals as well, that is the plan.
MXMag: I would like to note again today that you and your brother have a huge number of fans. Do you love that?
Hunter Lawrence: It is cool. We can be together and do something for the fans in this way. It is very special to experience that so many people follow and support us. We're happy that we could do something special for all our fans today. The American crowd is great and it's cool to see how they support me and Jett.
MXMag: You've been in the US for a while now, making the transition from Australia to Europe and then to the US. What was the most difficult step for you?
Hunter Lawrence: Going to Europe, for sure. They live differently there, there is a different culture. In Europe it is just very difficult to get used to the lifestyle. America is just very similar to Australia, which makes it easier to integrate here in the US. So the step from Europe to the US was very easy for us.
