World Supercross Championship announces first official teams!
SX Global, the Australian company that acquired the rights to the FIM Supercross World Championship (WSX), today announced four of ten exclusive team licenses. Among those first four, two American teams – HEP Suzuki and MotoConcepts Honda – and also two French teams – Bud Racing Kawasaki and GSM Dafy Michelin Yamaha.
All four are independent teams selected for their experience at the highest level in supercross and motocross. Although those teams are not factory teams, up to six different brands would immediately participate in the first edition of the World Cup.
In terms of design, SX Global is taking a completely new direction. “While WSX is a unique model in supercross, it is one that is used by the majority of the thriving sports leagues and motorsports series around the world. WSX has an exclusive ownership structure for its teams, allowing each team to increase its value over time. In addition, this platform also offers a large number of commercial opportunities at a global and regional level for international and local events.
This unique model, combined with SX Global's $50 million budget to support teams and drivers over the first five years of the championship, sparked huge interest in becoming an official team. In total, the promoter received more than 40 applications from candidates all over the world.
All ten teams will be announced in the coming weeks. The first four teams in a row:
MotoConcepts Honda – Mike Genova
Successful businessman Mike Genova is at the helm of MotoConcepts Honda. This team is considered a permanent fixture in the AMA Supercross. Genova regularly performs well there and has focused exclusively on Supercross for several years. He currently works with talented riders such as Vince Friese and Justin Brayton.
Pipes Motorsports Group – Dustin Pipes
This team - better known as Twisted Tea/HEP Motorsports - is led by the young Dustin Pipes. He made the switch quite early from a career as a driver to a role as team manager and owner. Pipes Motorsports Group is directly supported by Suzuki Motor Company from Japan but is not a factory team. Pipes and his men are ambitious. This year the team competed in SX with Justin Bogle, Brandon Hartranft (8th in 450SX this year) and Adam Enticknap.
GSM Yamaha – Serge Guidetty
The Guidetty team, in full GSM Dafy Michelin Yamaha, is the official team of Yamaha France. Together with Bud Racing, this is the first European team to participate in the FIM Supercross World Championship. Guidetty was himself a fine SX rider and with Maxime Desprey the team has the reigning French SX champion. In addition, multiple Arenacross UK champion Thomas Ramette and Anthony Bourdon will represent “the blues”.
Bud Racing Kawasaki – Stephane Dassé
9mm Bud Racing Kawasaki is one of the leading teams in France and has been in the GP paddock for quite some time. Bud riders have already attracted attention in both the Motocross World Championship and the EMX. Team boss Stephane Dassé has already more than earned his spurs. His team played a key role in the development of some of the most successful riders in the sport, including Marvin Musquin, Gautier Paulin, and Dylan Ferrandis.
