Herlings injury update: there will be two additional operations
MXGP world champion Jeffrey Herlings will likely be out of action for the remainder of the 2022 motocross season as he undergoes surgery on both his left and right lower legs. The aim is to be fully fit again for the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship.
Herlings has not yet recovered sufficiently from the left heel that he broke just before the opening round of the 2022 campaign. The condition of his foot means a similar impact could lead to further damage.
After discussions at the KTM Motorsport HQ in Munderfing, Austria, the management of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, together with Jeffrey, decided to opt for two additional medical procedures. As a result, he will miss both the remainder of the 2022 MXGP period and the opportunity to compete in the AMA Pro National motocross series in the US.
The 27-year-old motocross rider will have a plate removed and his left foot corrected and will also go to the operating room a second time for more repair work on his troublesome right foot to reduce the discomfort and inflexibility that has plagued the Dutchman for some time. Recovery and rehabilitation from both procedures means that 'The Bullet' can go into the winter fit, ready to test and train with a view to a possible third MXGP title in 2023.
Robert Jonas, Head of Motorsport Offroad: “This was both a difficult and easy decision. It was difficult for Jeffrey to miss any more races, especially as there were some tempting targets for him for 2022, but it was also easy as he would have been risking his health again. We spoke and decided that he should use the time to fully prepare for his fourteenth season with us in 2023. We all know how fast and competitive Jeffrey is when he is fit, happy and confident and that is how we need him in our racing program.”
