First series of MXGP of Spain for Maxime Renaux
The first series of the Spanish Grand Prix in the MXGP class has just been held. That was won by a very strong Maxime Renaux.
The sunny Arroyomolinos south of Madrid provided a tough series in the toughest class. The circuit was made quite wet and that caused treacherous spots and very deep ruts in the corners. No Ben Watson at the start today. The Kawasaki rider crashed yesterday and was in too much pain to compete today. The holeshot was for Jorge Prado ahead of Maxime Renaux and Tim Gajser. Jeremy Van Horebeek was already 14de got away from the starting gate. Already in the first lap Renaux gained wings and took over the lead from Prado.
After a few laps, Brian Bogers and Glenn Coldenhoff were fourth and fifth. Tim Gajser then had his sights set on Prado's second place and put pressure on the Spaniard. The latter went wide in a corner and had to let the Slovenian pass. On lap five Seewer fell away from the front and fell back to P12. Gajser then increased the pressure and took leader Renaux in his sights.
It remained close racing between the first three drivers because home driver Jorge Prado also stayed close to Renaux and Gajser. The reigning MX2 world champion kept his cool and won the series. It was already his second series victory this year after Argentina. Gajser finished second ahead of Jorge Prado and another well-performing Brian Bogers. Jeremy Van Horebeek dropped out of the race after three laps with technical problems.
