Technology: no TPI on the 2023 two-stroke crossers from Austria?
It has been an open secret for a while, but now more information is trickling in about the upcoming two-strokes from KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas. It increasingly appears that the two-stroke crossers of the 2023 model year will be equipped with fuel injection. But are the engineers throwing the well-known TPI technology of their two-stroke enduros overboard?
A few years ago KTM introduced the revolutionary TPI system on their enduro machines. TPI stands for Transfer Port Injection. Two injectors atomize gasoline into the two scavenge ports and the oil is injected into the crankcase space where the crankshaft rotates. A separate oil reservoir ensured that you could simply fill up with petrol, so you did not have to provide a pre-mix for these models.
KTM will definitely release a major update on their 2023 motocross bikes. With a probability bordering on certainty, the new two-strokes from Austria will come with injection on all their models. And it looks like they've ditched the TPI system for the new motocross bikes. Spy photos show that the two injectors on the sides of the cylinders have disappeared and that there is no longer a separate oil reservoir in the frame.
On the photographed prototypes there appears to be an injector in the throttle body. This would mean that these new two-stroke riders would have to refuel with pre-mix as usual. On the enduro models with TPI, the ratio between petrol and added oil was constantly changed by the machine's ECU.
The photos you see are of the Husqvarna TC125 of the Austrian Maximilian Ernecker who participates in the European EMX125 championship. The machine is equipped with an electric starter given the fact that a start button is mounted on the right handlebar. On the left side there is the well-known map switch. The throttle is equipped with a double throttle cable, just like the four-stroke.
So we are very curious about what news KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas will release soon. Injection on a two-stroke dirt bike would be a true revolution in the motocross world. If all this comes true, they will once again take a significant lead over their competitors in Mattighofen.
