Preview: 2022 250SX East Coast Championship
After six races of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship 250SX WestCoast, the 250SX East Coast starts this weekend in Minneapolis. An injury forced Jett Lawrence to change coast at the last minute, but the Honda rider is without a doubt the favorite for the title fight. Who will compete with him? We look ahead to the championship here.
A new champion:
Last season Star Racing-Yamaha won the title with Colt Nichols. None of the riders who will compete this season have an SX title to their name. Lawrence is the favorite but we don't think it will be a walk over. In our opinion, the main opponents are Jeremy Martin and Austin Forkner. Both are going to start their last 250 season so it is important for both riders to perform and get a good contract for 2023!
GasGas/KTM/Husqvarna:
From Austria, four drivers are deployed on the three different brands. With RJ Hampshire and Stilez Robertson, Husqvarna is the only brand with a pair. Just like Martin and Forkner, the 26-year-old Hampshire has to get into the spotlight to take the next step. The rider from Florida also has Robertson as his teammate this season, the 19-year-old rider won the AMA Nicky Hayden Amateur Horizon Award in 2020. The Tem TLD-RedBull-GasGas uses Pierce Brown and Maximus Vohland takes action on behalf of KTM in this championship.
Kawasaki:
At Team Pro Cirucit-Monster Energy-Kawasaki, the pressure is on Forkner's shoulder. It's his job to finally get this title back to Mitch Payton. The last time it worked was in 2010 with Christophe Pourcel! In addition to the 23-year-old Forkner, Cameron McAdoo and Jett Reynolds play for the team. Reynolds is a rookie and has been associated with Kawasaki for many years.
Yamaha:
It is up to Martin and Levi Kitchen to retain the title at Star Racing. In the WestCoast, Christian Craig is firmly in control, 28-year-old Martin can say goodbye to this class in style> Perhaps Kitchen can join the battle for the podium places.
Suzuki:
Just like in the WestCoat, Suzuki is also in the starting field here. Derek Drake and Preston Kilroy will try to score high, just like Carson Mumford did earlier this season by getting off to a good start.
Calendar:
The match at US Bank Stadium is the first of nine games. The first five follow each other in rapid succession. There will also be two East-West shootout races, the first on April 16 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
