Dakar: Sam Sunderland takes the overall victory
The British Sam Sunderland won the Dakar Rally for the second time in his career this morning. It is the first victory for the Spanish brand GasGas, which has been under the wings of KTM for several years.
Sunderland had to start second today and lost little time. Pablo Quintanilla, second in the rankings, went all out on the attack and also set the fastest time. However, the Chilean fell short to defeat Sunderland. Quintanilla finished second in the final standings in his first Dakar for Honda.
After Quintanilla, Brabec finished in second place in the final stage, Toby Price came third ahead of the other two Hondas of Jose Ignacio Cornejo and Joan Barreda. Mason Klein completed a strong debut in sixth place, Luciano Benavides was seventh ahead of Matthias Walkner and Sunderland. Lorenzo Santolino completed the top ten.
Our lowlanders did well again in the last stage. Jérôme Martiny finished the stage in 35th. Northern neighbor Wiljan van Wikselaar came in 37th. In the final standings Martiny can maintain his 31st place and that is a very good achievement. This Dakar Rally was one where the emphasis was on navigation. Every time a rider at the top of the rankings had to be the first to start a stage, navigation errors were made. It thus became a strategic game in which it was important to award the leading position in the rankings to a competitor and to strike at the crucial moments. Sam Sunderland did that best in this edition. You can read all results via this link.
