Everything you need to know about the upcoming Dakar Rally.
The 2 starts on Sunday, January 44th edition of the famous Dakar Rally that will be held for the third time in Saudi Arabia. This edition will mainly consist of sand, sand and more sand. No fewer than 168 brave motorcyclists will take up the challenge on New Year's Day.
ASO, the organizer of the Dakar Rally, offers the riders 8375 km of which 4258 km is registered as special. Kevin Benavides won last year's race on a Honda, breaking KTM's reign. The Austrians won 18 times in a row but had to bite the dust earlier this year. Benavides will start this year with number one on board a …… KTM.
Four Belgians
For the first time since 2013, four Belgian motorcyclists will be at the start. Last year Walter Roelants (Husqvarna) was the only one. He was the oldest Belgian motorcyclist ever to reach the finish line. He will be joined next week by Dakar debutants Jérôme Martiny (Husqvarna) and Mathieu Liebaert (KTM). After an absence of several years, Mikael Despontin (KTM) is also participating again.
The favorites
It seems that never before have there been so many contenders for a final victory. The Austrians are once again heading to Jeddah with a large fleet of good riders, with their house brands KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas. In addition to Kevin Benavides, there is also Sam Sunderland (GasGas), Daniel Sanders (GasGas), Skyler Howes (Husqvarna), Xavier De Soultrait (Husqvarna), Toby Price (KTM) and Matthias Walkner (KTM). Honda selected José Ignacio 'Nacho' Cornejo, Joan Barreda, Ricky Brabec and Pablo Quintanilla. Adrien van Beveren is the man who will defend the Yamaha colors. He gets Ross Branch, and Andrew Short at his side.
Other well-known names who could finish high are Rui Goncalves and Franco Picco. Remarkable is the participation of Danilo Petrucci. He is a speed racer and concluded his MotoGP career this year on board a KTM. He once won his home race at the Mugello circuit. His dream of one day participating in the Dakar Rally will become reality on January 1. You can view the full list of participants here .
The Dakar 2022 consists of 12 stages. The first is already on January 1. It is a connecting ride between Jeddah and Ha'il to determine the starting positions of the first real stage the next day. One day of rest is provided. It will take place on Saturday, January 8 in the capital Riyadh. The race ends again in Jeddah on January 14.
