Sam Sunderland for GasGas to the Dakar Rally
GasGas Factory Racing announced yesterday that Sam Sunderland will race under the GASGAS Factory Racing flag together with Daniel Sanders in 2022. They are undoubtedly two heavyweights in the rally world, who finished third and fourth respectively in the 2021 Dakar Rally.
Former Dakar Rally winner Sam Sunderland needs no introduction. The Brit has dedicated much of his life to rallying and lifted the Dakar winners' trophy in 2017. Since then, Sam has been crowned FIM Cross-Country Rally World Champion in 2019 and continues to challenge for that coveted second title in the Dakar. Sunderland was back at his best at the 2021 edition of the event, staying in the race for victory until the very last day.
Daniel Sanders strengthens the team for what will only be his second full season in rally racing. The Aussie started the year with an impressive fourth place in the 2021 Dakar and went on to win the bronze medal in the FIM Cross Country Rally World Championship.
Both drivers are now busy preparing for the 44th edition of the Dakar Rally, which starts on January 1, 2022.
Sam Sunderland: “It is super exciting for me to join the GASGAS Factory Racing team. It is a relatively new team, but with a strong foundation and a lot of expertise behind the program. It's certainly a new challenge and a new opportunity for me and it gives me a lot of confidence to be in a similar environment so I can focus on the work ahead. So far everything has been very positive. I've been lucky enough to spend some time on the bike lately and I can't wait to get racing. My goal is to win the Dakar again and also take the first victory for GASGAS, so I am very motivated and excited for the future. It's cool to race in new colors and I'm looking forward to coming out swinging in the Dakar on the red bike.”
