MX2 Trentino: Double Tom Vialle, Jago Geerts second
After Fabio Quartaro's historic MotoGP world title, Tom Vialle went one better for French motorsport fans. Thanks to a double series victory, the Red Bull KTM star raced to his 6th GP victory of the season. An excellent Jago Geerts (2-2) reached the podium for the first time since Kegums.
Tom Vialle once again took the holeshot - his 14th holeshot of the season - in the first heat. Isak Gifting, who had only set the 22nd fastest time in the qualifying session, conveniently slipped into second. Thibault Benistant, Stephen Rubini Andrea Adamo and Kay De Wolf also had a good start.
That could not be said of World Championship leader Maxime Renaux who was only 18th at the start. With no pressure behind him, Vialle was able to determine his own race and lines. The reigning world champion rode flawlessly from start to finish.
GasGas factory rider Gifting surprised with an excellent round. Geerts bit his teeth for rounds on the tough Swede. Only in the last round was Jago able to deal with Gifting. Benistant was clearly struggling with a physical problem after hurting himself during the timed training. Not only did he gradually lose ground with four laps to go, the Monster Energy Yamaha rider even had to retire.
On a track where overtaking is traditionally very difficult, Renaux had to settle for P6. Kay De Wolf once again handed over his business card in Arco. The 17-year-old super talent was 4th for a long time. Unfortunately, he had to give up one position to Ruben Fernandez on the last lap
Geerts just not
The second holeshot of the day was again a perfect match for Vialle for his teammate Rene Hofer. Geerts had a good start in third position. De Wolf - on excellent form in race 1 - started in the top 8.
Maxime Renaux opted for an alternative starting line-up on the inside, but that gamble ended badly! After a fall in the first corner, he now had to come back from 31st position. For the second time today, the World Cup leader had to do everything he could to limit the damage.
Hofer easily followed Vialle's rhythm. However, things went wrong for the young Austrian after 8 minutes of the match. This allowed Geerts to move up to second place without difficulty. Jago started to believe in his chances and approached Vialle lap after lap. However, launching an attack was a different matter, especially after Vialle found his second wind. Although Geerts pulled off a strong final offensive, the Frenchman remained out of harm's way.
Jed Beaton, seventh in the opener, was in better shape in the revival. The Australian now took third place, just missing the final podium. That honor went to Ruben Fernandez (114 Motorsport Honda). The Spaniard had finished 4th in race one and now finished fourth.
Kay De Wolf also continued his momentum from the first race. Kay held up very well on a very treacherous and very unDutch track. De Wolf rode in 6th place for almost the entire race. He still had to work hard to hold off Mattia Guadagnini. Ultimately, the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna crossed the finish line one-tenth of a second ahead of Guadagnini.
Thanks to his strong return after his hand injury, Vialle has once again maneuvered himself into the battle for the final podium. In the standings he has jumped over Guadagnini and is now third, just four points behind Jago Geerts. MX2 rookie Kay De Wolf is eighth, just 4 points behind Thibault Benistant.
