Herlings wins Italian spectacle for Coldenhoff!
Despite a mediocre start, Jeffrey Herlings took the lead in a blood-curdling second race. Herlings won the GP but Glenn Coldenhoff, who finished second in the second heat, completed the Dutch party!
With four riders within four seconds, leader Jeffrey Herlings and his pursuers crossed the finish line in the first series. The Bullet thus recorded its 11th series victory of the season. Head starter and polesiter Jeremy Seewer rode to a nice second place ahead of Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser.
In a similar race as in the first MX2 race, it also proved difficult to overtake here. Jeremy Seewer in particular benefited from this. He took the holeshot ahead of teammate Watson, Herlings and Prado. In recent months, the sympathetic Swiss has been struggling with the Epstein-Barr virus, but now he seems to be getting back into shape.
Watson made a mistake in the initial lap and saw his favorable starting position go up in smoke. The first round went even worse for home driver Tony Cairoli. He fell, hurt his leg and disappeared from the race. Febvre, meanwhile, immediately attacked and advanced from P6 to P4 in two corners. Then Febvre also tried to attack Herlings' position, but it did not budge.
After 11 laps, Herlings had enough with Seewer's solo run. Although Jeffrey passed smoothly, he could not simply shake loose his competitors. All the big names were at the front, but winning a place proved to be very difficult. Title candidate Gajser crossed the line in fourth place, 0,6 seconds behind Febvre. Glenn Coldenhoff finished fifth, well behind the top 5.
Due to a heavy fall - when he was in 5th position - Prado had to settle for 8th place. Mathys Boisrame finished ninth in his first series for the Kawasaki factory team. Jeremy Van Horebeek had a bad start, but the Brabant Limburger was able to recover nicely to P12. The decisive second race starts at 16:10 PM.
Herlings beats Coldenhoff in exciting race 2
The second race started with a crash in the first corner for Kevin Strijbos, Brian Bogers and Thomas-Kjer Olsen. JM Honda Racing's Henry Jacobi caused a major surprise by taking the holeshot ahead of Febvre and Coldenhoff. Benoit Paturel and Ben Watson were also in good shape.
Title candidates Herlings and Gajser, on the other hand, had a bad start. They were initially 12th and 13th respectively. Unfortunately, for home rider Cairoli, the day continued as it had started. The nine-time world champion crashed together with Jeremy Van Horebeek. Cairoli would then also give up.
With Gajser and Herlings pushing their way forward and Coldenhoff keeping in touch with Febvre, we were heading for a sensational denouement this time. Just after half the match, 'the Bullet' went over Gajser. With Herlings behind him, Coldenhoff went on the attack. The Monster Energy Yamaha rider took the lead from Febvre, Herlings moved up to second place. However, Febvre also had to tolerate Gajser.
In a fantastic denouement, Herlings gained the upper hand over Coldenhoff. Gasjer did everything he could to come back, but had to watch as the Dutch top players remained out of his reach. The series that had started so hopefully for Romain Febvre turned out to be a disappointment for the ex-world champion. The Kawasaki leader finished fourth, 10 seconds behind Gajser. In the World Cup standings, he was 12 points behind Herlings for today. Now he is already looking at 24 points! Moreover, Febvre also narrowly missed out on the final podium.
