MXoN: Olsen wins first series, Belgians take second
Just before the start of the first series of the MXoN in Mantua, Italy, the floodgates opened wide so that this edition of the nations competition will turn into a mud race. Thomas Kjer Olsen won this series for MXGP/MX2 riders while the Belgians are second in the standings.
The Latvian Karlis Sabulis took the peloton in tow after the first corner where Antonio Cairoli and Glenn Coldenhoff eliminated themselves and had to chase. Jose Butron and Tom Vialle follow in his footsteps. Cyril Genot came away in eighth place and Liam Everts was 19th after one lapde place in your hands.
With Coldenhoff's crash and Van De Moosdijk's poor start, Team NL had to try to make up many places. That was not an easy task because the rain quickly smeared the glasses and it became busy in the goggle lane.
In lap five, TKO took the lead from Sabulis and the German Max Nagl had to retire with mechanical problems. Cairoli also has to come in for a fresh pair of glasses during his advance and resumes in P24. Sabulas then has to give up a few more places when he hits the rear wheel of Mattia Guadagnini. With a few laps to go, Tom Vialle is still very close to leader Olsen, but the Frenchman is now also on the road without glasses and opts for the certainty of second place. Olsen wins the series ahead of Vialle, Ben Watson and Arnaud Tonus. France is thus the interim leader for the Belgians and the British.
