Maxime Desprey French MX1 champion after thriller!
Last year, Maxime Desprey (Dafy Michelin Yamaha) narrowly defeated Jeremy Van Horebeek, who took the title thanks to elimination results. This time too, the nail biting continued until the end in Villars-sous-Ecot. Desprey reached the final with one point ahead of Milko Potisek!
In fact, Desprey remained in control for almost the entire championship. Because rival Potisek, the French sand specialist par excellence, struck hard in Magescq, he fought back into the fight.
Maxime Desprey started today's final round in the championship with a six-point deficit. Yet the ex-Gebben Van Venrooy had his fate in his own hands. Due to a larger number of victories, two victories were theoretically enough to still seize the French title.
Thanks to a victory in the opening series, Desprey laid the foundation for his title. After all, he came close to one point. Potisek (photo above) had to go on the offensive, made a few mistakes and also had to pass multiple French champion Xavier Boog - Desprey's teammate who made his comeback for the occasion. Although he succeeded in the final phase, the Yamaha Motor France rider had to tolerate Cédric Soubeyras!
At the start of the decisive series, Desprey was still one point behind Potisek. The closing MX1 race was claimed by the proverbial third dog: Benoit Paturel. The Honda SR Motoblouz took the holeshot, had nothing to lose and went all out for its opportunity. Although Desprey also received a gift when Potisek made a mistake early in the race and dropped back to P5. Desprey finished second after Paturel and thus kept Potisek behind him. That was just enough!
After the heavy disappointment of 2020, finally a second national MX1 title for the likeable Frenchman.
