ISDE: Erik Willems steals the show, Belgium confirms!
After three days of competition, the question for every rider is how your body reacts in the morning to a new, tough day. The fourth day could not have started better for Erik Willems. In the first cross test of the day he mixed with the big boys!
New challenges await the riders tomorrow, including today's canceled test that will be run twice against time. Both the Belgian and Dutch World Trophy teams continued their momentum. The Belgians and Dutch remain 10th and 15th respectively.
Briefly noted
- With a 25th time in “CT1” and a P6 in the E2, Erik Willems showed that joining the world top is possible. Yet it was not all roses and moonshine. Erik is also starting to feel tired. In the scratch he continues to hold on to P38.
- Dietger Damiaens also had an unpleasant introduction to Italian soil today. However, DD wouldn't be himself if he didn't keep attacking! The ISDE rookie is now 12th in E3. Hopefully Dietger, who is currently 49th in the scratch, can maintain that top-50 ranking until Saturday.
- Fellow rookie Henson Lievens (photo above) remains the pacesetter of the Belgian Junior World Trophy team. Together with Willems and Damiaens, he is the third Belgian on course for a gold medal. We will let enduro expert Wim Vanderheyden explain what that means tomorrow. For now you just have to believe us that Henson is working on a great first “Six Days”. We find him at P68 in the scratch. In the penultimate cross test of the day, the GasGas Belux pilot even went on the hunt for his first top 50 ranking!
- Good news from the Dutch Junior World Trophy driver Mike Bokslag. The technical concerns are behind us. Just a shame about that one minute penalty.
- No complaints worth mentioning from Mr Thierry Pittens, on the other hand! Thierry enjoyed riding and if all goes well he can continue strong tomorrow in the last enduro day and of course during the final cross on Saturday. We find Pittens at P59
- Daan Bruijsten is the second Dutchman with a view to ISDE gold. Thanks to great Josep Garcia in Daan's E2 class, that 10% time limit is anything but easy, but it is there. Come on Zane!
- Max Schwarte (photo above) had a few small problems today, but that shouldn't spoil the fun.
- Tommie Jochems remained a bit hungry in terms of route today, but he also continues to push ahead. The WPM Motors KTM pilot did not have a great day and fought with the engine a little more than he would have liked. But Tommie remains combative and we will certainly see him make up some room on days 5 and 6.
