Renaux takes double, Geerts a neat second
The 7th GP of the season was won by Maxime Renaux (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2). It is the 2nd GP victory of the season for the Frenchman (photo), who is doing good business in the title battle. Renaux beat teammate Jago Geerts (3-2) and Mattia Guadgnini (2-3).
Kay de Wolf finished ninth in Latvia, the Eersel resident finished ninth and eighth. With his GP victory, Renaux increases his lead in the championship, the difference with Guadagnini is 34 points while Geerts climbs to third place at the expense of Ruben Fernandez. Jago is now 36 points behind Maxime Renaux.
1st heat:
After his fourth training session, Isak Gifting is clearly looking forward to it, but he wants too much and hits the starting gate. Guadagnini is not fooled and the Italian takes his second FOX Holeshot Award of the season. Geerts follows before Beaton, Rene Hofer and Renaux. The leader in the standings is clearly looking forward to what he quickly passes the Austrian. Just before that, Beaton took over second place from Geerts. The Balenian then sees Renaux pass, while the Frenchman also catches Beaton a little later.
Leader Guadagnini has now built up an almost four-second lead. This is quickly canceled out by Renaux who takes over the lead. In the final phase Guadagnini seems to come back, but Renaux sees the danger and he wins. Guadagnini comes second ahead of Geerts and Beaton, who recovered well in the second half of this race. Thibault Benistant completes the top five, which means we once again see three Yamahas in the top five! De Wolf crosses the finish line ninth in the starting field that only consists of 22 riders!
2st heat:
When the starting gate for the second heat drops, Mikkel Haarup reacts very well and dives into the first corner with Guadgnini. The Italian again narrowly takes the FOX Holeshot Award ahead of Haarup and Renaux. The winner of the first round immediately attacks the Dane. Gifting follows in fourth place ahead of Geerts, but he quickly passes the Swede. A little later Ruben Fernandez does the same, but that is not possible without a contract. The GasGas rider falls and Beaton falls to the ground with him. Renaux passes Haarup for second place and after more than ten minutes the Frenchman takes the lead!
He then seems to take control of the race, but Geerts has a strong final sprint. The 21-year-old rider makes it exciting, but his teammate takes the second heat and is therefore the winner. Geerts comes second ahead of 19-year-old Guadagnini, Tom Vialle and Fernandez. The Wolf works very hard and fights with Hofer and Benistant but a small mistake allows both to pass. The 16-year-old Husqvarna rider crosses the finish line in eighth.
Next time:
The Motocross World Championship continues on September 5 in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey.
