Motorsport Flanders honors Dirk Geukens
Last summer, July 22 to be precise, Belgian motorsport prematurely lost one of its heroes. Dirk Geukens was barely 57 when he died of heart failure. The Balenaar will be remembered tomorrow on 'his Keiheuvel' by the top sports organization of Motorsport Vlaanderen.
As a contemporary of Eric Geboers, Georges Jobé and Jacky Martens, Dirk was often in the shadows. However, as a private driver he reached the top 3 in the 500cc World Championship twice, won two GPs and became Belgian champion, among other things. Even after retiring as a GP rider, the KMC Mol club pilot continued to participate in motocross at the Keiheuvel for many years.
Geukens himself stood on the podium three times in the Sylvain Geboers Trophy. Tomorrow he will proverbially stand on the highest scaffold at 'de Kei'. A banner in honor of Dirk Geukens will hang on the stand of Topsport Vlaanderen Motorsport. We will also have to look out for the “number 3 sticker” on the license plate of various drivers. After his active career, Dirk remained closely involved in the guidance of emerging talent through Motorsport Future and later Motorsport Vlaanderen. Geukens was an important mentor for fellow countryman Jago Geerts.
