Here is the new Honda CRF250R
The first Honda CRF250 dates back to 2004. With each subsequent generation, Honda has introduced new technologies. It's no surprise then that the 2022 Honda CRF250R is an all-new machine that raises the bar with improved corner-exit acceleration, better endurance and lighter weight for greater agility.
The goal for the 2022 CRF250R design team was ambitious, so Honda engineers focused their efforts on making the model faster, stronger and lighter by boosting engine performance, increasing reliability and reducing weight .
The updated engine produces more torque at low speeds without sacrificing power in the highest ranges. This results in a wider powerband. Significant weight savings have been achieved through updates to the chassis with improved ergonomics while retaining the driving characteristics of its predecessor. That, together with the newly designed exhaust system, results in a saving of 8 kg for the new CRF250R up to 104 kg.
Much of the weight savings is due to Honda moving away from dual mufflers and back to a single system. Low-end torque has been significantly improved through an air intake adjustment, a revision of the valve timing and a straighter exhaust port. The changes result in a 20% increase in power at 6500 rpm, while maintaining strong top-end power.
By changing the shape of the air filter box, its capacity has increased by 78%. The angle of inclination of the fuel injector has been increased from 30 to 60 degrees, allowing the injector to reach all the way behind the butterfly valve. Together, these changes provide better intake air cooling, improving airflow efficiency and low-end torque.
33mm titanium intake valves and 26mm exhaust valves are again used, but the intake valves now feature twin springs to ensure precise movement at higher engine speeds. The intake camshaft sprocket is now press-fit, improving valve timing accuracy and reducing weight. The oil volume to the cylinder head has also been increased by changing the gear ratio of the oil pump. Honda is moving away from the dual exhaust and now has a single straight system, which improves low-end torque.
The ECU has a completely new mapping to deliver the optimal air/fuel mixture and ignition timing at all throttle positions and speeds. The launch control, modified to HRC standards, ensures better holeshots. The clutch now has nine discs instead of eight, increasing the amount of friction material and reducing the load on the individual discs. The cage has been made stiffer and an additional spring reduces the load.
The five-speed gearbox now only has one shift fork, the countershaft has become stiffer and the shift drum is now 17 percent lighter. The improvement results in a better shifting feel for the rider and the gear ratios have been changed to better utilize the new engine power in the low and mid rev range, with first and third gear usable in a wider speed range. Finally, the aluminum frame has become 680 grams lighter and is strongly derived from that of the CRF450R.
