Febvre wins, miracle podium Herlings
Jeffrey Herlings also rode for victory in the second heat. A fall on the first lap decided otherwise, but the KTM powerhouse was allowed to take second place on the podium. Thanks to a strong second series, in which he overtook Pauls Jonass, Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Kawasaki) was able to take his first GP victory of the season. Perfect timing!
Both Kawas had an excellent start with a holeshot for Romain Febvre. Unfortunately, his teammate Ivo Monticelli bit the dust again and gave up. Pauls Jonass, Jorge Prado and Arminas Jasikonis also started strongly.
Four corners after the start things went wrong for Herlings who was just outside the top 5. The four-time world champion came into contact with fellow countryman Glenn Coldenhoff and had to chase the last position. However, the way 'the Bullet' came back spoke volumes about his motivation. After 6 laps the Red Bull KTM rider entered the top 10. Halfway through the race, Herlings easily danced past Cairoli for sixth place. Given his speed at that moment, two seconds per lap faster than his competitors, there seemed to be much more to it. Ultimately, however, Jeffrey ended up in P5.
However, Febvre was not given the victory either. The 29-year-old Frenchman was leading the race when he made a slip on the second lap and was dropped to 4th place. This gave Pauls Jonass free rein. The GasGas driver was able to take full advantage of his good start. Jonass' first MXGP series victory was within reach, but Febvre proved a bit too strong. The Kawasaki rider defeated Prado and Jonass in succession to take his second victory of the season.
For Gajser, the second series was unfortunately a repeat of the first. The speed, but just a little too impatient and too many mistakes. As always, the Slovenian super talent could not be accused of a lack of effort. In the final phase Tiga went hunting for Jonass, but typical of his race he choked again. Away P2 and so P4 became his part.
Striking observation from the Belgian side: sand hare Cyril Genot placed 12th in the final series, between factory riders Brian Bogers and Glenn Coldenhoff. Genot finished 14th overall, making him the best Belgian today.
