VLM Retie: Van Meer and Van Geldorp divide the loot
After the canceled race in Tessenderlo, the VLM riders finally started their season today. In the 500cc, Jens Van Meer and a strong Kevin Van Geldorp kept each other in balance. Ultimately, Jens' better 2nd series was the deciding factor. In the quarter liters the series victories went to Kristof Scheynen and Brent Aerden.
The hard work of organizers Jurgen Van Nooten and Ake Hens was rewarded with a fantastic competition day on the Duinberg in Retie. Many riders, many spectators, a great circuit and last but not least a lot of attention from all employees to ensure proper compliance with the corona measures. Nice to see!
On a fast circuit, Jilani Cambre fired a warning shot in the morning with a nice pole, 'reigning champion' Van Meer followed less than 0,3 seconds, but Jordi Van Mieghem also clearly felt in his element.
Early leader Steve Seronval could not enjoy his lead for long. Almost immediately Kevin Van Geldorp, who had also started well, took control. He would not relinquish leadership again. Cambré was fifth in the initial phase and soon came third behind Jordi Van Mieghem. Halfway through the race the WMX Yamaha rider moved to P2, but that was all he could do. Although Van Meer had a poor start, he systematically moved up and fought back from ninth to third place.
We already saw that Cambré is in good shape despite a lack of competition rhythm during the EMX Open in Maggiora last weekend. In the revival he even seemed to be on his way to the series victory ahead of Jens Van Meer! However, Jilani was forced to slow down after hurting his heel in an unfortunate contact. This not only allowed Van Meer to easily close the gap in the second half of the race, the BeTemo champion also won by a wide margin. A regular Van Geldorp now finished third while Arno Van Mieghem surprised himself with another fine fourth place. This gave the Kawasaki rider fourth place in the final standings
The battle for the quarter liters was also worth it. Especially in the second heat. After Brent Aerden's victory in the opener, Kristof Scheynen stole the final victory from his rival in the final round! In the first series Kristof was ninth overall, but after a poor start he pulled off a very strong heat. In the final, Scheynen would finish fifth, 30 seconds behind winner Van Meer.
