Tough day for Gebben-Van Venrooy Racing
The third Grand Prix of the season did not go smoothly for Gebben-Van Venrooy Racing. The Yamaha team saw Brent Van Doninck finish best in fourteenth place, the trio tells their story here from Maggiora. It also looks ahead to the Dutch Grand Prix on July 17-18 in Oss.
Brent van Doninck:
“The day didn't start badly with a fourteenth place in the timed training. It wasn't great but enough for a good place behind the starting gate. In the first moto I didn't get off to a good start and only finished the first lap in fifteenth place. I worked my way up to tenth place and felt very good. I had a good rhythm and felt strong and good on the bike. In the second moto I had to go to the goggle lane a few times and crashed a few times. I'm a little bit disappointed because I wasn't able to do two good motos. I feel I should be able to finish in the top ten twice, or even higher. We will try again in Oss and let's hope we have good weather because I'm not a fan of this. I hope I can see some of my own fans again in Oss and it is also the team's home Grand Prix."
Kevin Strijbos:
''I am a little disappointed. The driving is not bad, but my starts are not working and we have to find something for Oss. The starts are so important and when you get starts like me, it's not easy. In the first heat I came into contact with another rider on the starting field and was therefore actually last. It was difficult to overtake, but I managed to finish in nineteenth place. The speed of the riders between tenth and twentieth place were almost the same. I'm quite good in the mud and that allowed me to make up a lot of places in the second moto. Thirteenth place was the most I could get out of it because I also ran into problems with my glasses in the final phase. If I can get a good start, I can easily be in the top ten and that leaves me disappointed and frustrated for now. We are going to work hard for Oss and hopefully we can do better there!”
Calvin Flanders:
"It was a difficult day for me. I was not happy with my twelfth time in the timed training. In the first moto I seemed to get a good start, but in the first corner I was tagged, which forced me to go wide and start the race outside the top twenty. It was not an easy race, but I came back to fourteenth place. I felt good on the track but it was not easy to make up places. In the second moto I again didn't get a good start and I had to survive in the mud. I was in eighteenth place until I ran out of rear brakes and had to leave the race. I'm happy with how I feel on the bike but I need to get a good start."
