Knübben/Lenz win MON Sidecar Cross Geldermalsen
The German combination Knübben/Lenz won the first MON Sidecar Cross in Geldermalsen. With a second and first place they scored the same number of points as Mulders/De Laat, but Knübben/Lenz took victory in the second heat and with an equal number of points the result of the last heat in motocross is always decisive. The Van Dijk brothers finished third in the day's results.
Geldermalsen is one of the few courses in the Netherlands with clay as a surface. This makes it a hard and fast track, but it becomes extremely slippery when it rains. The latter was precisely the case in the morning and as the day progressed the surface of the track would change in characteristics. From slippery in the morning to absorbing mud afterwards and in the afternoon to dry and hard again.
In the first heat, comeback 'kids' Brusselers/Van Gennip took the holeshot, but later other combinations came alongside. Mulders/De Laat won the first heat ahead of the German duo Knübben/Lenz and the left sidecar of Mike Keuben and Moreno Hoessen, who again finished third at the finish.
At the start of the second heat we immediately saw Keuben/Hoessen in a leading role again. However, not how they would have wanted this! The gear wheel of Keuben's left sidecar hit the gear wheel of Bens/Van Leuken's right sidecar just after the start. The Keuben/Hoessen sidecar was defeated and skidded off the track, with driver Hoessen being launched from the arena and getting a wet suit when he ended up in the ditch! However, things went well at the front with Bens/Van Leuken taking the holeshot in the first corner. After a number of laps, Knübben/Lenz came to first place and they did not give it away. Mulders/De Laat finished second and Bens/Van Leuken converted their holeshot into third place at the finish. Behind Bens/Van Leuken, Bram and Dirk van Dijk finished fourth. They had already scored this place in the first heat and this consistent score allowed them to take third place on the day's podium behind Mulders/De Laat who came second and winners Knübben/Lenz.
