Herlings wins rain-drenched second series and the GP
Jeffrey Herlings did an excellent job today in the world championship. He won the second series and was able to close the gap with leader Tim Gajser. This second series was a battle of attrition with a lot of hustle and bustle in the goggle lane.
Just before the start of the series, the umbrellas opened because the ominous sky announced a pack of water. It continued to rain until the end of the race, causing many glasses to fly off and the goggle lane to be busy. The holeshot now belonged to Glenn Coldenhoff, who followed his compatriot Jeffrey Herlings in his wake. World Cup leader Gajser was now less successful and had to find his way to the front from twelfth place.
Romain Febvre, the winner of the first series, soon had to get new glasses, but that did not prevent him from crashing twice and seeing his podium spot go up in smoke. He earned a twelfth place in this mud ballet. On the twelfth lap, Herlings took over from Coldenhoff and drove to the series victory with a conservative driving style. Gajser, who started less well, managed to make up some places in the final laps and finished in sixth place. Coldenhoff now finished second ahead of Antonio Cairoli who had to complete part of the race without goggles.
Just before the finish, Pauls Jonass managed to steal a place from a strong driving Henri Jacobi of the JM Honda racing Team. Herlings wins the series and also the Italian GP and thus comes within six points of leader Gajser. In addition to Herlings, Coldenhoff and Cairoli are on the podium with all three 40 points, with the second series of course being decisive for the final score. Within two weeks the MXGP caravan will head to Oss in the Netherlands for the first sand race of the year.
