EMX125 2021 Preview
The European 125cc Championship starts tomorrow in Matterley Basin. This is the first opportunity to introduce yourself to the big teams as a youth rider. Of course, the EMX Youth Final is also held during an MXGP weekend, although this is very different with a series of races. All EMX125 competitions are held on a Grand Prix circuit. We look past the upcoming title battle.
Favorites:
In his third season, Hakon Osterhagen has to show something in the EMX125. The past seasons in this championship with CreyMert Racing have been very variable. The matches in Lommel were good, but the Norwegian was very irregular. As the replacement for champion Andrea Bonacorsi at Fantic Racing, Osterhagen is the big favorite for us. In 2019, Valerio Lata (Marchetti Racing) won the 85cc World Championship at the Arco di Trento circuit. Last season he performed well in Mantova, the KTM rider finished ninth in the championship. Because the top eight from last season have transferred, the greatest pressure is on the shoulders of Osterhagen and Lata. Xavier Cazal (VHR-KTM) and Andrea Rossi are certainly fast on the hard circuits, but can they do that for a whole season?
Last chance:
For Osterhagen, this is his last chance to score high in the EMX125. After all, for 2022 the EMX250 will follow something that also applies to Kay Karssemakers. The 17-year-old rider from Boxtel competed against Kay de Wolf for years. This has already reached the Grand Prix. Karssemakers is part of SKS Racing-Husqvarna-KNMV, which means that the guidance is top notch. It will be an important season for the Brabander!
Newcomers:
Other years the winner of the EMX85 usually comes over, but that race was not held last season. Ferruccio Zanchi (MJC Yamaha) and Bradley Mesters (F&H Racing Shop) are newcomers who can both score high, but for the first year it is especially important to learn a lot and regularly get into the points. This also applies to Elias Escandell, the rider from Ibiza who is included in the RFME GasGas Junior Team led by Jimmy Verburgh.
Belgium:
After Liam Everts, Belgium has two riders, the brothers Sacha and Lucas Coenen, who can compete well at the front. The twins have already shown great things in Spain and France in the long pre-season. We expect them to be on the podium regularly in the colors of 9MM Energy Drink-BUD Racing-Kawasaki. Other Belgians in this championship are Nicholas Vennekens (KTM) and Baptiste Beernaert (F4E-GasGas).
The Netherlands:
In addition to Karssemakers, Ivano van Erp is also a rider of whom we have high expectations. The Ossenaar is again part of MJC Yamaha and has taken a big step last winter. The same applies to Scott Smulders who is also starting his last season in this class. Smulders (JUMBO-Husqvarna-BT Racing) has already won the EMX85 and hopefully he can also show this in the EMX125. The other Dutchmen are Cas Valk (SKS Racing), Danny van den Bosse (Motor2000) and rookie Damian Knuiman (Team Knuiman).
It will be a great championship with hopefully a leading role for the Laaglanders!
