Van Erp disappointed, Zanchi crashes and still wins
The first race of the European 125cc Championship did not go smoothly for the MJC Yamaha Official EMX125 Team. Ivano van Erp trained very well and got off to a reasonable start, but his glasses broke in the initial phase. With limited visibility it is easy to make a mistake and that is what happened to the Brabander. From 39th place, the Yamaha rider has to work his way to the front. Van Erp returns to 17th place and scores four points. The second heat is 'won' by Ferruccio Zanchi, but he crashes hard and needs medical help. The match is flagged off and the results are drawn up at the previous pass. Zanchi therefore wins the second heat but misses the podium.
Van Erp was playing catch-up after a problem in the early stages, but due to the early checkered flag he remains outside the points. Zanchi is taken to hospital but escapes with a concussion. After a night in the hospital in Southampton, the Italian can go home, but it remains to be seen whether he can start next weekend.
