Smulders wins, Van Erp makes a big impression
Scott Smulders (photo) won the first race of the KNMV Open Dutch Championship 125cc at the Motorsportpark Gelderland Midden. The Husqvarna rider finished first and second, taking the day's victory. The man of the race in Ivano van Erp, he crashed at the start of the first moto and then came back to fifth place.

Van Erp was the fastest man in the training sessions, but the Brabander was unable to capitalize on this at the start of the first heat. Yoran Moens makes the best start ahead of Smulders and Danny van den Bosse and 'rookie' Bradley Mesters. The KTM rider is allowed to take the lead for a while, but then Smulders takes the lead. Mesters seems to be able to follow for a while, but later the student has to let go. Moens seemed likely to take third place for a long time, but in the last minutes of this match Sem de Lange came up. Despite a mediocre start, De Drent drives very well and manages to take third place ahead of Moens. Van Erp drives a great race because he manages to fight back very strongly to fifth place. This means he doesn't steal the show, but he also has a chance of winning the day.
2e some
In the second heat, Van Erp emerged from the first round as leader and he will not relinquish this position. Smulders tries for a long time to get the lead, but in the second half of the match it is Van Erp. The Yamaha rider wins ahead of Smulders and De Lange who rides with a deflated rear tire! It is a special father's day for De Lange who would have liked to give it extra color with a podium place. Mesters has now had a poorer start and the F&H Racing Shop driver has managed to work his way back from outside the top ten. He is doing very well with a fourth place and Mirco ten Kate now completes the top five.
