EMX250 2021 Preview
For most motocross riders, the European 250cc Championship is the last hurdle towards the FIM MX2 World Championship. There are also riders who take a step back and give it another big hit. This category includes Kevin Horgmo, Jeremy Sydow and Nicholas Lapucci. Which of this trio will put themselves back on the market?
Favorites:
Without a doubt, the aforementioned trio will be very successful. We have a lot of confidence in Hakon Fredriksen, the Norwegian should start better, but there is no doubt about the speed of the Kawasaki rider. Fredriksen will have to compete against Jorgen Mathias Talviku, the Estonian from the JUMBO-Husqvarna-BT Racing Team. Last year Talviku managed to show itself well from the front with a private Husqvarna. Bas Verhoeven has of course noticed this and the Dutch team now has a title candidate. The title may be a lot to ask for Camden McLellan, but we certainly expect the South African to be on the podium in this championship. This list also includes Tom Guyon who has made the switch to Team VHR.
Last chance:
The most pressure probably lies on the shoulders of Horgmo, who had imagined his first GP season very differently. Perhaps the Norwegian can do himself a favor with the GasGas? This is also a great opportunity for 22-year-old Lapucci, he can write history with Fantic and Maddii Racing. The 2-stroke rider has already shown great things in the preseason and managed to win the MX2 title in Italy. Sydow has been brought to Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing to succeed champion Thibault Benistant. Can the injury-prone German handle the pressure?
Newcomers:
Many riders are switching from the EMX125 to this class. We can expect a lot from Andrea Bonacorsi, after winning the title he was picked up by Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing. Although we did not see Maxime Grau at the front in the EMX125, the Frenchman was picked up by Husqvarna. The 15-year-old rider takes over Kay de Wolf's place at Negaan MX. The other newcomers here are; Pietro Razzini, David Braceras, Andrea Roncoli, Quentin Prugnieres, Florian Miot and the Dane Rasmus Pedersen. Last year Meico Vettik (TBS-KTM) already rode a number of races, but this will be his first full season. Unfortunately we have to miss the injured Guillem Farres Plaza in the first match.
Belgium:
With only three Belgians, the largest motocross country is not very well represented. With Liam Everts they immediately have the biggest name in their ranks. The KTM rider was on his way to the EMX125 title last year, but a crash in Faenza threw a spanner in the works. The 16-year-old rider is now making the switch to the EMX250. The other Belgians in this starting field are Adrien Wagener and Wesly Dieudonne.
The Netherlands:
With no fewer than 13 riders, the KNMV is the best represented of all countries. We don't think there is a title candidate, but honorary places are certainly possible. Marcel Conijn (Mulders Motoren) is the most experienced of the group, can he take another podium spot like last season? Rick Elzinga (TBS-KTM) and Kjell Verbruggen (Sarholz-KTM) are also riders who should be able to regularly appear in the top ten. The other Dutch people we see in action; Romano Aspers (VIP Lounge), Kjeld Stuurman (Brouwer Motorsport), Jan Spliethof (Movit Motorsport), Jeremy Knuiman (Team Knuiman), Dave Kooiker (Hutten Metaal), Jens Walvoort (Motor2000), Raf Meuwissen (Riley Racing) and Boris Blanken (GasGas).
