Kay De Wolf: “The speed, not the points yet”
The Russian GP was a milestone for 16-year-old Kay De Wolf. The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider made his long-awaited World Championship debut there. Although the end result (16th) could have been better, “The Red Hurricane” certainly showed that he belongs in MX2.
For teammate Jed Beaton, Orlyonok was a disappointment. The Australian had to settle for 7th place. He finished 7th and 11th respectively in the heats. To make matters worse, he crashed spectacularly in the second series after Isak Gifting lost control on the finishing jump.
Beaton did well in the timed training. He qualified third, 0,6 seconds from pole. De Wolf set the 15th fastest time.
Jed Beaton: “Not a good way to start the season. My starts weren't what they should have been, but we will definitely work on this and we are looking forward to the next round. Things can only get better after this!”
Kay de Wolf: “I had trouble with the track in the morning, but I still managed to set a (fast) lap. I had a good start in that first moto, but lost some places early on. In the end I arrived tenth. My start in the second moto was bad, but the riding was really good. I went straight to P6, but that didn't last long because of my crash. I finished 21st in that second moto, but we are on the right track.”
Rasmus Jorgensen (Team Manager): “Not the way we had hoped to start the season, but the pace is there and there are still plenty of games ahead. A few bad starts and bad luck, but at the end of the day we have to be there at the start and that was not the case. We will fight back in Matterley Basin in two weeks.”
