Renaux on stage, Bervoets talks about Crisolles
The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team resumed competition in Crisolles on Sunday. Maxime Renaux finished third after two strong runs against the much more powerful 450 engines. Thibault Benistant finished sixth, Jago Geerts ninth.
Renaux, who had set the third fastest time, got off to a good start on his YZ250FM in the first heat. The Frenchman dove into the wake of Strijbos and Seewer – on their much more powerful 450s – in the first corner. Renaux, who has fully recovered from a dislocated shoulder at the end of February in Riola Sardo, immediately found good speed and held on to third place until the end. Geerts took a rather mediocre start (ninth) and also suffered from pumped up arms in the initial phase. The Belgian only found a good rhythm towards the end of the series and tried to steal sixth place from Petrov in the very last corner. But that resulted in a slide, causing the Kempen native to cross the line in ninth place. Two spots ahead of his teammate Benistant. The Frenchman - who has also fully recovered from a broken collarbone - missed his start completely (18th), but quickly found a good rhythm and was able to move up seven places despite two slips.
Strong Benistant
Benistant started much better in the second series and entered the field in fifth place, behind four MXGP riders. The reigning European EMX250 champion felt very confident and jumped over Van Doninck to fifth place. A position that he eventually had to give up to 'good old' Strijbos. In the meantime, Renaux had fought his way from eighth to sixth place. Just enough for third place on the podium, where he beamed with Yamaha MXGP riders Seewer (1+1) and Strijbos (2+2). Geerts lost his balance at the start and had to fight back from the very back of the pack. Not easy against all those 450 riders. Yet Jago still managed to finish ninth.
Marnicq Bervoets
“I was very surprised by the intensity and high speed in the first match in a long time. It was an aggressive race from the start, which is a bit to the disadvantage of Geerts. We know from the past that Jago often suffers from pumped arms in the first matches and needs some time to find his best level. Maxime and Thibault did not suffer from pumped up arms at all and immediately reached a high level. Although this is just a preparatory race, it is always nice to see one of our riders on the podium. Especially after a duel against the much more powerful 450 machines on a difficult track.”
